Future Pirates: 2013 defensive recruits

With National Signing Day around the corner, this two-part series previews the 2013 recruiting class

This is the second of our two-part series highlighting some of ECU's incoming recruits. While we focused on the offensive recruits on Mon., now the focus is on the future Pirate defenders:

LB Devaris Brunson, Lake City High School, SC

Ht: 6'1"

Wt: 210

Brunson is widely considered ECU's best incoming recruit, and for good reason. He shows a true knack for disrupting plays in the backfield, whether it be when the quarterback drops back to pass or on delayed handoffs. Almost all of Brunson's highlights feature him with his ears pinned back, which is a look the Pirates can look forward to in the coming years.

Though it would be good to see more footage of him in coverage, Brunson has the necessary speed to not only keep up, but outrun most offensive threats. Pirate Nation can only hope that he will keep that up at the next level.

LB Tristan Mumford, Statesville High School, NC

Ht: 6'0"

Wt:225

Tristan Mumford was a dominant two-way player at Statesville, playing both running back and linebacker. He is projected to play linebacker for the Pirates, and brings a good mix of athletic ability and defensive prowess to an already talented ECU linebacking corp.

When running the ball, he shows great speed and looks to initiate contact. Those are two key factors that will translate well to the defensive side of the ball. It is obvious that the Pirates have set their sights on athletic, playmakers at the linebacker position. With both Mumford and Brunson, ECU has hit the nail right on the head.

DT Mike Myers, Goose Creek High School, SC

Ht: 6'1"

Wt: 270

Sometimes the name says it all. That is certainly the case for Goose Creek defensive tackle Mike Myers. Like the famed Hollywood terror, Myers seems to always be around when there is punishment to dish out. He also uses his relatively-light frame (for defensive lineman) to contribute for more than just stuffing the run.

But what I like most about this kid is how he plays the game with a visible sense of passion. When he makes a play, he makes sure everyone knows it. His teammates seem to rally around that.

CB A.J. Coplon, Havelock High School, NC

Ht: 5'11"

Wt: 175

Coplon could be a bit of a dark horse recruit for this class. With the Pirates in desperate need of secondary help, any defensive back recruit has the opportunity to make a name for himself.

Though he will almost certainly need some time to develop before seeing any serious playing time, Coplon has shown that he is getting progressively better with time. If that trend holds, and he continues to add weight to his frame, Coplon may be the one making plays in years to come.
